The girl in the pickle

Who are you?

I'm Kate, the girl in a pickle.

I live in Portland, Oregon, but I was born and raised in the Sunflower State. You'll find old recipes here, and new ones; there are stories I carried with me from Kansas and new discoveries I've made in Oregon. I burn things and I make great jam. My scones taste like heaven, but the yeast bread I bake often doubles as a door shop. I understand life better by cooking through it.

My husband, two kitties, and friends co-conspirators make sure I'll never run out of subjects for blogging.

Why are you in a pickle?

When I started this blog, I worked a variety of part-time jobs in radio. Breaking news kept me busy and listening to police scanners while anchoring a newscast taught me to multitask, but I could see my BA in English gathering dust on its shelf at home. I needed an excuse to write creatively, from a first-person perspective.

That summer, I tried to can a batch of home-made pickles from our kitchen Victory Garden...but I tossed in almost three times too many mustard seeds. The day I bit into that first, god-awful pickle, I knew I'd found something worth writing about. Now, I'm still in radio and still getting into scrapes in the kitchen!

Kate's in a Pickle is for anyone who's over-strung and under-prepared for life's gastronomic adventures. Enjoy your stay, and drop me a line at kadiveykate@gmail.com.
